Man, I love to eat.
It’s that time of the year. If you live in the States, we’re entering into our “Holiday” season. Which basically, if you’re trying to lose weight, means the entire world turns its vast might against your lame ass.
What did I do? And what am I doing this year? The same thing I do every holiday, I EAT! Hahaha. Probably not healthy enough, but my mindset is different through November and December.
See, I work in an office setting where we have lots of “pot lucks” and “VPs coming to visit for the holidays who want to be taken out for dinner and drinks” and let’s not forget the family gatherings and the Thanksgiving meal that typically extends over the full four days of the weekend. Yeah I know. Trust me. I really know. It’s not easy.
So you can do one of two things.
1. You can fight it every step of the way. Barely partaking in festivities and eating, or simply eating less or just picking out healthy things to eat. Beating yourself up for every extra bite you take.
2. You can EAT. As in, just eat a normal meal with everyone else and LIVE YOUR LIFE.
So, you know where this is going right? You have to LIVE YOUR LIFE. So enjoy yourself. I don’t say in moderation. Enjoy yourself all you want.
But I want you to keep a few things in mind.
You’ve busted your ass to lose weight thus far, and you don’t want to lose all the hard work you’ve put in. So watch yourself.
You need to use the Great Equalizer DAILY. Work out like a mad man or woman, especially on or after days where you know you’re going to be indulging. Like for me, on Thanksgiving Day, since I know I will have very little control and will eat until I pop, I will get up a little early that morning and WORK MY ASS off before we leave. Knowing I need to burn a shit load of calories.
Keep in mind something else. During the holidays, I coast. I try to maintain my loss, and not try to drive deeper. Just stay as static as possible. Then, when January pops around, I regather my focus. I recommit myself. And see, I know I am going to do this, which makes it easier to enjoy Christmas Dinner with my family. People see me and are like, “wow you’ve lost a lot of weight!” and they see me pig out. HA!
I start rolling in January, and am usually in full force by February and March and April. By May, I am a MACHINE again. See, there aren’t too many holidays (Except the Super Bowl) in those months. You can focus, while your Great Enemy, The World, turns its attention to other matters. By the summer, you should be down a lot. But that’s another blog post.
